An hours-long search for a violent offender ended in a standoff in Nanaimo, where neighbours had to evacuate their homes, Mounties say.
The suspect, a 39-year-old man, “allegedly assaulted and forcibly detained another person” Saturday evening, according to. The victim had managed to call police after the man left, prompting officers to respond and search for him.
RCMP say an “extensive search” was carried out over the next 18 hours, eventually leading the officers to a home on Monterey Drive, off Jingle Pot Road in north Nanaimo.“Because of the violence displayed by the suspect and the possibility of the suspect being in the possession of firearms, the Vancouver Island RCMP Emergency Response Team was called to assist,” said police in a statement.
Early Sunday afternoon, people in nearby homes were evacuated, and a crisis negotiator was called in to talk with the man, in an attempt to end the standoff. He eventually walked out of the home around 5 p.m. Jan. 2 “on his own accord,” according to RCMP. He was “promptly arrested without incident by ERT officers.”They say the man has been remanded into police custody until Feb. 11 on an uttering threats charge, and more could be laid as the investigation continues.
“We would like to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the nearby residents. Their patience and understanding of the situation made the job of the attending officers that much easier,” added Ret. RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien on Monday.
