The Nanaimo RCMP is reminding residents to be cautious with their money after two men lost more than $17,000 combined in Bitcoin scams.
The Nanaimo RCMP is reminding residents to be cautious with their money after two men lost more than $17,000 combined in Bitcoin scams in just a single 24-hour period.
“This person told the victim that the victim’s identity had been compromised and in order to protect his money, he needed to send a percentage of his assets to the suspect for safekeeping,” said Nanaimo RCMP in a release Thursday. The scammer said the victim was eligible for a $849 “refund,” and when the victim responded that scammer told him they would send the money after he filled out a questionnaire.
The victim was asked to send the money back through Bitcoin, and after he complied, the victim realized he was scammed.
