Nanaimo RCMP is collecting your old cell phones, providing they hold a charge, and re-distributing to those who don't have a way to call.
If you receive a cell phone for Christmas, Nanaimo says RCMP it will take your old, un-used cell phone providing it still holds a charge, to ensure as many people as possible can call for help if needed.
“Many people have unused or outdated cell phones just sitting around gathering dust, but if they can still hold a charge and call 911, they can be a lifeline for someone else,” says RCMP. “Imagine if your phone was broken or stolen by the person who was hurting you, preventing you from calling for help. A new phone is a lifeline to family, community support agencies, and Emergency services,” says Nanaimo RCMP.
Before dropping off your phone, RCMP says to remove your SIM card and complete the “factory reset” steps to erase all personal data.
