South Nanaimo residents are coming together this holiday season to support Denis Bezeau, a beloved thrift store owner, who aims to feed over 1,000 struggling individuals. Donations of food and gifts are pouring in at a rapid pace.
South Nanaimo neighbours are banding together to help one another this Christmas season, and their donations and heart filled goal is expected to feed over 1,000 people who are struggling among them. . Nov. 29, 2024.
“It’s small, what I can give, but I hope it helps,” said Nanaimo resident Wanda Sly, who donated a large box of canned goods. This holiday season, Bezeau has a goal to feed more than 1,000 people using the thousands of dollars he’s saved from the past year’s thrift store sales. The money will go towards turkeys and hams, and donated gifts will be distributed to those who need them.“It’s not just food. I’ve been giving a lot of free stuff away here. I’ve never ever seen so many debit and credit cards that will not allow them to pay with now,” said Bezeau, the owner of Deni’s Dynamite Deals on Nanaimo’s Seventh Street.
It’s a need echoed at Nanaimo’s Loaves & Fishes Food Bank, where food bank usage has increased by 94 per cent in the past four years.
