OTTAWA — National media outlets are reporting Prime Minister Mark Carney will call a snap federal election on Sunday, several months before the scheduled vote. Outlets like the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, CBC/Radio-Canada and CTV have all confirmed that Carney is scheduled to approach Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament, triggering the election period.
While the Globe is reporting election day would be April 28, it could also potentially be May 5 according to reports from CTV and the public broadcaster. Carney was sworn in as Prime Minister on March 14, just days after he was elected by the federal Liberal Party as their leader, succeeding Justin Trudeau.Trudeau prorogued Parliament on Jan. 6 and announced that he was stepping down as Liberal leader and Prime Minister once his successor was chosen. That gave the party time to choose a new leader for the next federal election.
