The winner of the series between the Giants and Chiefs advances to the WHL final against either the Prince Albert Raiders or the Edmonton Oil Kings, who are playing in the Eastern Conference final.
In honour of the Vancouver Giants’ series against the Spokane Chiefs, here are seven things to know about the Giants’ playoff run.
• The WHL champion moves onto the Memorial Cup, a four-team national championship tournament hosted by the Halifax Mooseheads from May 17-26. Over the last 10 years, six Eastern Conference teams and four Western Conference clubs have represented the WHL at the Memorial Cup. The 2014 Edmonton Oil Kings are the lone WHL team to win the national title in that span.
• The Giants feature four players from Saskatchewan: right-winger Dawson Holt , centre Jared Dmytriw , defenceman Kaleb Bulych and defenceman Alex Kannok-Leipert . Bench boss Michael Dyck and associate coach Jamie Heward were teammates on the blue line with the Regina Pats in the late-1980s and Heward spent six seasons as an assistant coach with the Swift Current Broncos before signing on with the Giants over the summer. The Raiders have a pair of B.C.
