Kenyan director Anuri Kahiu’s colourful take on the youth culture in the megalopolis of Nairobi follows two young women in love. In a country where homosexuality is still against the law, the story becomes one of the fight to love vs. societal conventions. The film was originally banned, but a court challenge gave the director the right to release the film. Starring newcomers Samantha Mugatsia and Sheila Munyiva, Rafiki is a look into a changing world too rarely seen.
Obviously, every day is for dancing. But in 1982, UNESCO declared International Dance Day to be marked on April 29 and events all over the world celebrate the moving arts with special events.
Becky Something is the self-destructive front person of riot-grrl combo Something She. In Alex Ross Perry’s drama, a decade of critical moments in the life of the singer and the band is traced in a series of five vignettes. With a cast including Agyness Deyn, Eric Stoltz, Dan Stevens, Virginia Madsen, Cara Delavingne, Gayle Rankin, Ashley Benson and Amber Heard, the film is on its way to becoming a cult hit.
