A retired Ontario justice of the peace and the current head of the Thunder Bay Salvation Army ’s Journey to Life Centre have been appointed to the Thunder Bay Police Service Board’s governance committee. Marcel Netemegesic Donio and Gary Ferguson were named community appointees in late January.
\In an interview with Dougall Media, Donio expressed his long-standing interest in police review and oversight, having served on oversight bodies for both the Anishinabek Police Service and the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service. He believes police provide a vital service to the public, offering protection and assistance when needed. Donio sees his experience in employment equity, human rights, and justice of the peace work as directly relevant to the role, although from a different perspective. He feels this appointment is an opportunity to give back to the community he's been a part of for many years. \Donio, a member of Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek (Sand Point First Nation), grew up on Rocky Bay First Nation after his community was forcibly relocated. He later moved to Thunder Bay, where he attended Confederation College and Lakehead University. Donio believes his experience dealing with community members who have varying opinions about police services will be valuable. He highlights his ability to engage with people, even those who are unhappy, as a key strength. \Ferguson, who has extensive experience in social service fields such as mental health and addictions, recognizes the multifaceted impact of police. He feels it's crucial to have a voice representing the community and its concerns, particularly regarding the population he serves. Ferguson considers the appointment an honor and is committed to advocating for the community and working towards building trust and transforming police services
