Conditions for ice-fishing and outdoor skating have improved near Thunder Bay, but provincial police warn people to check ice thickness before venturing out. Nolalu's Whitefish Lake has seen ice build-up, reaching 14 inches thick, but experts advise caution and recommend at least 4 inches for walking and 12 inches for light vehicles.
NOLALU — Conditions for ice-fishing and outdoor skating a short drive from Thunder Bay are turning out to be better than expected compared to just a few weeks ago, but provincial police say it's best to check ice thickness before venturing out on waterways.
In general, experts recommend ice be at least four inches thick for walking, and at least 12 inches for supporting a light-weight vehicle. Grey-coloured ice is usually unstable and can contain water. On Tuesday, provincial police recovered the body of an 82-year-old man who went through ice on Lake Temagami while riding a snowmobile in the Temiskaming area.

Thunder Bay Residents Push for Changes to Proposed Boulevard Gardens By-LawNine concerned citizens presented to Thunder Bay City Council, voicing their disapproval of certain aspects of the proposed boulevard gardens by-law. They argued that height limitations restrict food production, a ban on shrubs harms pollinator biodiversity, and mandatory registration could discourage participation. The residents also pointed out the by-law's lack of restrictions on pesticides and rodenticides. Following the deputation, City Manager John Collin agreed to consider amendments, focusing on allowing limited shrub use, imposing height restrictions on planter boxes, and prohibiting chemical use. Council will revisit the by-law after reviewing these proposed changes.
