Truro event bringing commnuity and partners together against gender-based violence

Representatives from community organizations in Colchester County will be gathering to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Pictured from left to right: Colchester Sexual Assault Centre executive director Jamie Matthews, Truro Pride program co-ordinator Abby MacLeod, Third Place Transition House program co-ordinator Brittany Murphy, Lotus Centre executive director Michaela MacLachlan and ElevateHer executive director Stephanie Atwood.

“Everybody has to be held accountable for violence against women and men play a key role in the prevention and reduction of violence against women,” said Matthews. “We can't continue to teach women how to protect themselves. We have to teach men how to stop attacking women.

"We've come far, but there's still so much further to go, which is depressing, but I think that's why it's important to keep doing these events and getting people involved,” said The Lotus Centre executive director Michaela MacLachlan. “Having events like this and partnering with like-minded organizations, helps to make all of our programs and services more trauma-informed," said Matthews. “We cannot revictimize or retraumatize the clients when we know and trust our referral partners and friends in the community. And I think that also helps to build trust with the community and with the clients as well because they know that when they come to us that we'll be sending them somewhere they will be cared for.
