Shines despite going through in-season throat surgery
The prized three-year-old relaxing during a hectic racing season.TRURO, N.S. — Three-year-old Schooner II Stables horse Beach Glass may have saved his best performance on the track for his last race in 2022.
“He used him hard off the gate, in the first quarter, and then had to grab him up. Once you fire them up, they can be hard to settle back down but he relaxed good. He ran up on that other horse’s back a couple of times, probably a little bit of that was to send a message to the driver to not slow down here too much or we’ll be moving on you, meaning we’ll take the front.
“He is not in the condition those other horses are with his surgery and the time off,” MacGrath said. “Just think of any athlete going through what he went through and coming back to compete at the highest level … it’s just not an easy thing to do. The first procedure – laser through the mouth – did not correct the problem, so surgery which necessary.
MacGrath said knowing now the horse was dealing with the breathing issue earlier in the season complicates his assessment of the season overall which was successful on many counts but, obviously, could have been even better.
