The Niles family of Truro recently swept the Family Feud Canada stage. “We’re the Niles family ready to bring the ‘Scotian potion’ all the way to $30K,' said captain Janelle Niles to her family’s cheers during the show.
Since the show, family members have been flooding her inbox with screenshots of her doing funny faces and comments about some of their answers. Kayla’s answer for a vegetable used besides carrots for a snowman’s nose was “bean” while Jilleen’s was “eggplant" – prompting some stifled laughs.
“With my comedy, I kind of just say it on stage how we're all feeling, because it's about time that we finally speak up about what has happened to us,’ said Janelle. “However, in Truro Nova Scotia, a lot of people are finally understanding what was happening because we were silent for so long. So that was relieving as well, making sure that we all can laugh together and not repeat the past mistakes. Then we can all grow together.
“I made sure I did it for them because they really love that show," said Janelle. “I wanted to give my family a little piece of what I'm getting as a comedian.”Janelle said she wears her emotions on her face and was feeling nervous. A producer invited her to loosen up and just enjoy the experience with her family. That is something she has learned about and has been holding herself accountable to since.
“The Syed family is so smart and educated,” said Janelle. “It was like ‘doctorate, masters, doctorate’ – I'm like, ‘oh my God, freaking public school education.’ I'm like how are we going to win against them? And I realized it wasn't about how smart you were, and I wish I knew that going in. It's not about how brainy or smart or how educated you are, it's about what Canada thinks.
