Ford government’s fall economic statement projects a $21.5-billion deficit, which is lower than was predicted in its budget earlier this year

The Ontario government says it will spend billions hiring more nurses and personal support workers and building more long-term care beds in the next few years, according to a fall economic statement it released on Thursday that projects a lower-than predicted deficit figure of $21.5-billion.

The fall economic statement, a kind of mini-budget the government releases in November, lays out a long list of already-announced measures, including Premier Doug Ford’s pledge this week to raise the minimum wage to $15, something he torpedoed when he came into office in 2018. “We have made incredible progress, but the job is not done,” he said in his introduction to the statement.
