Domaine de Grand Pré’s Recipe for Award-Winning Service and Hospitality | SaltWireSYDNEY - Réjean Aucoin first got word a couple of weeks ago that he would be a Canadian senator, but the feeling didn’t sink in until the announcement last Tuesday.
The appointment makes Aucoin the sixth Acadian senator and possibly the first from Cheticamp. Notable senators have come from the Acadian regions of the Maritimes such as Pascal Poirier, the longest-serving senator in Canadian history. He served for 48 and a half years. The Nova Scotia nominations to the Senate this week fill two vacancies left by previous senators. Halifax’s Terry Mercer retired in May 2022 while Membertou’s“They have diverse leadership experience and impressive track records serving others, and I know they’ll be strong voices in the Senate,” Trudeau posted on X about the new appointments last week.Parliament’s newest independent senators are Joan Kingston, John McNair, Krista Ross, Réjean Aucoin, and Rodger Cuzner.
While in Boston, he said he was “probably guilty” of watching too much American news, carrying with it exposure to the country’s often-volatile political landscape. “That's the approach that I'll take to this post and hopefully it'll be of benefit to to Nova Scotians and Canadians.”
