BC Hydro says it’s working to restore outages affecting more than 100,000 customers across the province as strong winds whip the coast Monday.

“BC Hydro has been carefully planning for this storm and has all available BC Hydro crews and contractor crews responding,” said the energy provider. In Sooke, Highway 14 has been closed in both directions east of Kangaroo Road due to a tree falling and bringing wires down across the roadway. Detours have been set up around the closure. Drivers heading east should detour onto Gillespie Road, while westbound travellers should use Happy Valley Road.“After a multi-year drought, vegetation has been weakened across the province, making it more susceptible to wind,” says BC Hydro. “As a result, many dead and damaged tress and branches have fallen, causing them to come into contact with BC Hydro’s electrical equipment. Crews are busy repairing damaged power lines, poles and other equipment.
