A ‘strong wind’ warning is in effect for East Vancouver Island on Wednesday including Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay, Courtenay to Campbell River and Greater Victoria.

Southeast winds are expected to reach gusts of 70 km/h and up to 90 km/h in exposed coastal areas and near Haro Strait, and may result in power outages and fallen tree limbs, according to a statement from Environment Canada on Oct. 30. “A Pacific frontal system approaching Vancouver Island will produce strong southeasterly winds. The strong winds will develop this morning then ease this afternoon when the front weakens,” the statement read.Between Campbell River and Quathiaski Cove , sailings have been cancelled up to and including 12:40 p.m., with sailings until 1:30 p.m. at risk of cancellation.Sailings between Whaletown and Heriot Bay have cancellations until 11:05 a.m., with sailings until 3:05 p.m.

BC Hydro says a tree has fallen across wires near the southern tip of Meares Island, Southeast of Tofino resulting in power outages to more than 1300 households. The power has been out since 8:43 a.m. on Wednesday. Crews are onsite and expect restored power by approximately 2 p.m. today.Nearly 1600 customers have been without power as of 9:39 a.m. in Saanich in areas East of Azurene Pl, North of Tanner Road. While BC Hydro is unsure of the cause, crews are onsite investigating.
