Halifax fire crews are on the scene of a large fire at the recycling facility in Goodwood Saturday. Goodwood: photo contributed.

“It has everything. It’s scrap metals, its petroleum-based products,” acting district chief Joe Fulton said shortly before 9 a.m. “It’s hard to get close, but it’s cars, fridges and miscellaneous metals.”

Crews were called just after 6 a.m. to the large pile of on Mills Drive. At least 18 fire trucks were called to the scene, including aerials, to try to quell the flames. Social media photos from the scene in the morning showed a large ball of fire and a large plume of black smoke. He said the pile is about 200 feet long by 200 feet wide.

“It’s massive,” he said. The entire pile was not on fire by 9 a.m., and crews were trying to keep it from spreading. He said there was too much fire early to get excavators close to pull away the unburned part of the pile, but by noon that operation was underway. “We have a defensive operation, so we have master streams set up. There are really no structures around it, so it’s surround and drown, that’s the term that we use.”
