No two lobster seasons are ever exactly the same. The weather differs. The shore price paid to fishers changes. The start date even varies. One constant, however, is the need to market the catch, but even this seems to change year to year.
A fisherman adds a lobster trap to the top of the pile at the Falls Point wharf in Woods Harbour. Weather permitting, the LFA 33, 34 commercial lobster fishery is scheduled to open Nov. 28. KATHY JOHNSONSOUTHWESTERN. NS – No two lobster seasons are ever exactly the same. One constant, however, is the need to market the catch, but even this seems to change from year to year depending on new challenges that arise.
“Due to generous government stimulus payments over two presidents, the closure of restaurants, an inability to travel and the desire to enjoy something special at home, Americans bought lobster in high volumes at retail that supported higher prices from approximately June of 2020 to April of 2022,” he said.
With frozen lobster, however, Irvine said they have seen a drop in demand from the United States. Stimulus money is gone. People are traveling. But inflation is causing consumers to trade down in their food choices. “The challenges around preventing mortalities to North Atlantic right whales also remains at the top of the list as additional measures are implemented, including whale-safe gear, measures to slow down shipping and prevent and mitigate entanglements,” Irvine said.
Other industry marketing measures include producing unique recipe creation videos through the Chef Ambassador Program for Instagram; producing unique trade-focused video telling the Canadian Lobster story in China; and building relationships with trade associations and seafood rating organizations in Europe and the United States.
In early October, leading seafood expert John Sackton presented a Lobster Market Outlook for the Lobster Council of Canada. Sackton, who has 45 years of experience in the seafood industry, said there is much to be wary of.
