Sudbury now three for four in series against Maritime squad

The Sudbury Five are on a roll in their four-game series against the Newfoundland Rogues of The Basketball League . Last night, the local National Basketball League of Canada team earned their third straight win with a 131-120 defeat of the Rogues.

The Sudbury Five put together a historic shooting performance to win the first game of a three-game series in Newfoundland against the Rogues 144-137. Sudbury was on point in terms of shooting, boasting a 75.4-per-cent average and sinking all but two of their 13 attempts from deep. What’s more, they did it without their leader, Jaylen Bland, who leads the NBLC in points and threes. The Five are without star Bland until the playoffs as he’s off to Iraq to help a pro team there through the playoffs. Texas native Curtis Hollis has been brought in to fill the space left by Bland. Not only was their shooting on point, the Five’s free thrown game was on full display on Friday, smashing the 11-year league record of 40 free throws made in a single game by going 47/53 from the line. “The major contributors to the ridiculous scoring output were JD Miller, with 22 points on a perfect 7/7 night, Jeremy Harris, who finished his sixth 20-point outing of the season so far, AJ Mosby, who had a season-best performance of 22 points, and Duane Notice off the bench, leading the team with 24 points, going 6/7 from the field, 3/3 from deep and 9/9 at the line,” the league said in a news release. The big numbers coming from the visiting Five overshadowed what was a banner night for Newfoundland, too. TBL scoring leader Armani Chaney had a line of 34-6-7, while Kenny Holmes posted a career night of 45 points and 10 assists. The win for the Five improves their record to 6-3, while the Rogues are still looking for their first win against NBLC competition after seven unsuccessful tries. Sudbury and Newfoundland go head-to-head again tonight at the Mary Brown's Centre. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. EST.
