“We hung with the best team in the national tournament,” says skip
After throwing a granite-sized scare into defending champion Brad Gushue to open the 2023 Tim Hortons Brier on Friday night, the B.C. champion Victoria Curling Club rink had Saturday off with an early bye day in London, Ont.
It did, as the VCC rink won rave reviews for its 6-5 loss to the highly-decorated Gushue from St. John’s, whose resume includes Olympic gold at Turin 2006, Olympic silver at Beijing 2022, one gold and two silvers in the world championships and three golds and two silvers at the Brier. Gauthier said receiving the bye day so early wasn’t an advantage or disadvantage: “It gave us a chance to calm down and regroup for the rest of the week.”The VCC rink consists of skip Gauthier, third Sterling Middleton, second Jason Ginter and lead Alex Horvath. Gauthier, Middleton and Horvath are all 24 and Ginter is 30. The rink is coached by Bryan Miki and is an amalgam, which is the trend now in curling.
