The playoff format being used at the Canadian men\u0027s and women\u0027s curling championships is not drawing rave reviews and some want it changed
Northern Ontario skip Darren Moulding says he hasn’t talked to many people who like the playoff format for the Brier. The playoff format — in which six teams advance to the playoffs — has been used at the Scotties and Brier since last season.
After making it to the final of the Scotties last Sunday in Kamloops, B.C., Jennifer Jones said she didn’t like the playoff format, particularly the seeding round, which seems extraneous.Jones lost the final to Kerri Einarson, who went 8-0 in the round-robin, lost the seeding final to Jones and then had to win three straight elimination games to take the championship.
So what would be the best solution to this seemingly age-old problem of finding a fair and manageable playoff format for Canadian championships?/Dunstone likes the old format, in which four teams from each pool made the championship round and then they played one another to complete the round-robin before starting the Page playoff.
“But if you’re just looking at the event, as a player, I think when we’re sending teams to the world championships, we should try to mirror what they do at the worlds, and that’s a semifinal and a final. I feel like if you want to qualify six teams, then you can set two ahead into the semifinal and have the other four teams play in a quarter.”Article content
