Victoria, British Columbia, is on the verge of setting a new record for the longest January dry spell in its history, with other communities across Vancouver Island also experiencing significantly below-average rainfall.

Victoria, British Columbia, is on the verge of setting a new record for the longest January dry spell in its history. As of Monday, October 25, 2021, the city has experienced an astonishing 15 consecutive days without precipitation, matching the previous record set in January 2014. If the dry conditions persist through Wednesday, as current forecasts predict, Victoria will officially surpass the 2014 record with 17 consecutive rain-free days.

Environment and Climate Change Canada reports that Victoria has received only 18% of its usual January rainfall. This unusual drought extends beyond Victoria, impacting other communities across Vancouver Island. Duncan and Nanaimo have recorded a mere 13% and 20% of their typical January rainfall, respectively. Comox and Campbell River have also experienced significantly below-average precipitation, with 29% of their usual rainfall. The Alberni Valley has seen only 41.7 millimeters of rain, a paltry 11% of its average 367 millimeters for January. Qualicum Beach has fared similarly, receiving only 25.1 millimeters, or 12% of its usual rainfall. On the North Island, Port Hardy has recorded a meager 36.1 millimeters of rain so far this month, representing just 15% of its typical 240 millimeters for January. The Environment Canada forecast predicts that the dry spell will continue until Thursday, with sunny skies dominating the region. A slight reprieve is expected late Thursday into Friday, as rain is likely to return, bringing much-needed moisture to end the month
