The Victoria Film Festival, the longest-running film festival on Vancouver Island, is set to host a record-breaking 90+ feature films in its 31st year. This year's festival boasts a diverse program of international, North American, and B.C. premieres, including highly-anticipated films like 'Meet the Barbarians,' 'Midas Man,' and 'Riff Raff.'
More than 90 feature films will be screened at the Victoria Film Festival in February, a record number for the longest-running film festival on Vancouver Island. The festival, now in its 31st year, announced its line-up Thursday evening during a pre-festival launch party at Monkey C Interactive’s Artcade on Fort Street. The festival runs Feb. 7-16 at seven locations, including The Vic Theatre, Cinecenta, and the Alix Goolden Performance Hall.
The program features 92 feature and 28 short films during its 10-day run, with international, North American, and B.C. premieres among the highlights. “Heading into our 31st festival, I’m pleased we’re still able to find films that can astound, inform, and entertain,” festival director Kathy Kay said in a statement. “This year’s lineup has broad appeal but some unique entries we are excited for people to have an opportunity to watch.” Organizers are hoping to build on the momentum of last year’s 35 sold-out screenings, the most of any Victoria Film Festival to date. The 2024 edition also attracted a starry roster of guests, which included two-time Academy Award nominee Atom Egoyan, Emmy Award winner Eric McCormack, and Tony Award winner Don McKellar. Guests attending this year’s festival have not yet been announced. Several highly-anticipated feature films are being shown next month, including: Meet the Barbarians, a satire from actress-director Julie Delpy; Midas Man, a Beatles-themed biopic with Emily Watson; Riff Raff, a star-studded comedy with Jennifer Coolidge, Bill Murray and Pete Davidson; Bring Them Down, an Irish thriller led by Saltburn star Barry Keoghan; and The Penguin Lessons, a Steve Coogan vehicle from The Fully Monty director Peter Cattaneo. A number of provocative documentaries are also on tap, from Fairy Creek, about the logging protests on Vancouver Island, and The Stand, Victoria director Christopher Auchter’s look back at the Haida Nation’s landmark blockade in 1985, to music docs about Blue Rodeo, Broken Social Scene, Paul Anka, Peaches, and Liza Minnelli.
