A City of Ottawa official said collecting or chipping all the debris from damaged trees and brush would require a "multi-week" operation.
Crews with Holland Power Services work to cut a live power line that was down in a backyard of a home in the McKellar Heights area on Saturday. As of Saturday afternoon, Hydro One’s outage mapped showed that approximately 12,000 customers in other sections of easterncustomers remained without power in Gatineau area as of Saturday evening. In the Outaouais overall, the provincial agency said, there were still 18,000 customers without electricity.
Of course, trees, limbs and brush remain a priority. As identified hazards, streets and pathways are cleared, staff and contractors will turn their attention to broken limbs, non-hazardous removals, re-inspections, pruning and brush/wood cleanup. To facilitate collection, the city encourage residents to tie branches with twine in bundles of less than 1.2 metres in length and 60 centimetres in width, and to ensure bundles or containers weighed no more than 15 kilograms . Larger tree cuttings, branches and brush may be brought to the city’s Trail Waste Facility at no charge until further notice, otherwise, these may wait curbside for chipping or collection by specialized city and contracted crews.
“You have our commitment that we will complete the cleanup efforts safely and as quickly as possible,” Gonthier said in the memo. “My sincere thanks to you and to our residents for supporting Public Works, and each other.”
