Sandbags available

Belleville public works is making sand and sandbags available for residents in flood vulnerable areas to protect their property. The resources are located at the Public Works property at 31 Wallbridge Crescent. Residents are asked to call ahead toResidents in low lying areas should take the necessary precautions to protect their properties. Please ensure sump pumps are functioning and the outlet is clear from obstruction, and secure items that might float away as flows increase.

The upper Moira, Black, Skootamatta, Salmon, and Napanee Rivers as well as watershed lakes have peaked or are peaking in response to last week’s rainfall. Most watercourses only reached bankfull. Stoco Lake approached 1 in 10-year flood levels and the Moira River in Tweed reached 1 in 10-year flood levels.

Next week’s forecast of warmer temperatures will melt any remaining snowpack and will cause watercourses to maintain or increase their water levels.All remaining ice surfaces should be considered unstable due to warming temperatures and higher flows. The public is advised to exercise extreme caution when near rivers and waterbodies and to stay away from open and fast flowing water, culverts, dams, ice covered water, and banks.

Staff will continue to monitor conditions. For current water levels or to report changes in water levels, residents are encouraged to visit QuinteConservation.ca.Notifies that flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.
