In reinventing the Champs-Élysées fountains, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec set out to create a public works that represents both joy and sorrow and can be enjoyed by everyone.
Brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are two of the hottest names in international design, known for their cutting-edge products — furniture, tableware, textiles, ceramics and art objects — as well as urban design projects.
The fountains but have been in a state of disuse for the past 20 years, but in reinventing them, the Bouroullecs set out to create a public works that represents both joy and sorrow and can be enjoyed by everyone, Erwan Bouroullec says. “The fountains revolve slowly to accompany passersby and the movement of traffic,” says Erwan. “This rotation, in addition to the mirror-like effects of the crystals, produces a continuous shimmer and provides an ever-changing perspective.”
Mayor Anne Hidalgo says it is her belief is that by investing in design projects like the fountains, the city will continue to be a popular destination among those interested in architecture and culture.
