AUGUSTA, Ga. – Corey Conners got a front-row seat Saturday to one of the great rounds in Masters history.
Starting the day tied with Finau at 3-under par, Conners birdied only the par-5 second and 13th holes and made bogey at No. 5 to shoot his third straight round under par. Finau, however, birdied the first three holes and never slowed down – matching the lowest score on the front nine and adding two more birdies on the back-nine par 5s to come within one stroke of tying the course record shared by Greg Norman and Nick Price .
After being the final player to get in the field with his maiden victory at last week’s Valero Texas Open, Conners has his eye on securing his return immediately. The top 12 finishers and ties automatically qualify for the 2020 Masters. Tied for 22nd at 4-under, Conners sits three behind 12th place and nine shots behind leader Francesco Molinari. Twelve major winners are tied with Conners or ahead of him on a loaded leaderboard.
With strong storms expected late on Sunday in Augusta, players will be sent out in threesomes off both sides starting at 7:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday morning. The leaders will go off the first tee at 9:20 a.m. with a target of finishing before 2:30 p.m. CBS will broadcast the final round live.Despite watching the long-hitting Finau play a nearly flawless round, Conners said he will not alter his game plan and be too aggressive in an attempt to post a low score and force a run at the leaders.
