The Calgary Flames will name a captain ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. One player figures it's a "simple" decision. That may not be the case.
Is it really simple? Or really complicated?
You can’t have ‘C’ and ‘See-ya’ in the same season. You can’t risk having to trade away your lead letter-wearer and face-of-the-franchise in a few months because he doesn’t think his team is capable of contending. What sort of message would that send? There are many, including this reporter, who believe that Rasmus Andersson should be the frontrunner. The workhorse defenceman fits a lot of the criteria — on-ice tone-setter, popular teammate, core piece, etc.
During the NHL’s off-season media tour, the 26-year-old Andersson told Sportsnet’s dynamic duo of Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek that “I’d obviously love to be the captain of the Calgary Flames” and “it’s something you would never turn down.” The Flames currently are the only Canadian club without a captain after the Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets finished their stitchwork earlier this week. Conroy, Huska & Co. must have a top candidate in mind, but the GM indicated “we want to see how training camp goes.”
