Maybe Elias Lindholm is never going to put pen-to-paper and commit his long-term future to the Calgary Flames.
While there were few details to really sink your teeth into, both players insisted the door wasn’t closed on contract extensions. From Lindholm, there was a general insistence that signing a new contract is a possibility. There were, of course, follow-up questions. There were no answers there. Maybe nobody should have been expecting any.
After a long summer of speculation, though, some fans might have been hoping for a little reassurance.Flames GM Craig Conroy, though, did present an optimistic tone.“Elias wants to be here and we’re working on that with his representation,” Conroy said. “We’ll just continue to keep doing that. I think it’s going in the right direction.”
He’s still considered an elite two-way centre and it’s understood that the Flames have made Lindholm a big-money offer that would keep him in Calgary long-term. He doesn’t want that to happen again with Lindholm or any of the other players who are set to become free agents next year — that list includes Mikael Backlund, Nikita Zadorov, Chris Tanev and Oliver Kylington — so there is a timeline on getting guys re-signed before the Flames need to start making trades.
