Flames centre Mikael Backlund, who’s entering the final season of his contract, says he’d love to play his 1,000th game in Calgary colours but isn’t quite ready to talk about an extension. As Salim Valji writes, the plan is to wait to see how the season progresses, making it that much more important the team gets off to a good start in 2023-24.

Backlund was drafted 24th overall by the Flames in 2007 and is among the franchise leaders in games played , trailing only Mark Giordano and Jarome Iginla. He is 11th all-time in points and 10th in assists . Off the ice, the native of Sweden has had an even bigger impact on the city, having just won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for community involvement and leadership.
“I only have so many years left and I want to make the most of it. But I love Calgary. I’m not just going to take off and leave.”
