The typical price for a bunch of celery is around $1.99, but lately the vegetable has been selling in Canadian grocery stores for up to $5.99 for a single bunch
Bad weather and a food fad promoting the benefits of celery juice have pushed the price of celery at major Canadian grocery stores to anywhere between $4.47 to $5.99 for a single bunch.
Contributing to the hefty price right now is weather and travel. Canada imports a significant portion of its celery, particularly from California. “The Yuma and Oxnard regions of the United States … have experienced unseasonably cold temperatures and heavy rainfall over the past few months,” Statistics Canada spokesperson France Gange wrote in an email.
William says drinking 16 ounces of celery juice every morning on an empty stomach helps with a whole host of health problems: from chronic illnesses including fibromyalgia, Lupus, eczema, psoriasis to ailments like bloating, acid reflux and aches and pains. David Jenkins, the Canada research chair at the University of Toronto, Amanda Lapidus, a registered dietician, and Ken Riedl, an analytical chemist at Ohio State University, all contested the validity of sodium cluster salts, saying they had never heard of it in their professional careers.
Riedl says he wouldn’t recommend celery as a superfood because it’s 98 per cent water and two per cent fibre. “It’s just hollow,” he says. Celery, like trees, are meant to move water around the plant and most of its health benefits are concentrated in its leaves. Unlike bell peppers and berries, which are brightly coloured, celery is a bland green, signifying it is less nutrient dense. “If colours are really intense, it’s always a good indicator there are lots of in them.
