Roman Sadovsky is in the lead after winning the men's short program at the Canadian figure skating championships. He aims for his second national title while facing competition from other skaters and the pressure of expectations. World champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps lead the pairs event.
Roman Sadovsky isn't shying away from the opportunity. He's aware that the Canadian men's figure skating title is within reach. Sadovsky took the lead in the men's event by winning Friday's short program. He acknowledges the mental challenge of staying focused on the competition despite the weight of expectations. \Sadovsky, who landed a quad jump but stumbled on his triple axel, scored 81.44 points before a packed crowd at Place Bell in Laval, Que.
He maintains his usual lighthearted approach, even when acknowledging the unfortunate fall. He's aiming for his second Canadian championship after his victory in 2020. \The 25-year-old from Vaughan, Ont., leads the men's competition, with Anthony Paradis of Boisbriand, Que., in second place (77.27) and Toronto's John Kim securing third (71.32). In the pairs competition, world champions Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps took the lead with 76.31 points. This marks Stellato-Dudek's first competition since gaining Canadian citizenship in December and the duo's first event since withdrawing from the Grand Prix Final in December due to Deschamps' illness. \The reigning world champion pairs team, Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps, hold the top spot, followed by Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud (70.43) and Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Ethier (63.10), mirroring last year's podium order. The men's and pairs free programs are scheduled for Saturday. \Sadovsky, along with other contenders Wesley Chiu, Aleksa Rakic, and Stephen Gogolev, were seen as top contenders in the men's competition. However, injuries forced Chiu and Gogolev to withdraw, and Rakic, who had secured silver last year, placed seventh after falling on two jumps. He attributes his performance to a recent illness. \ Skate Canada will consider the results for its world championships selection in March, but high-performance director Mike Slipchuk stated that a decision will be made after the Four Continents competition in February. Canada will only send one male skater to the world championships in Boston
