Roman Sadovsky takes the lead in the Canadian men's figure skating championships with a solid short program performance. Despite a fall on his triple axel, he landed a quad jump and secured a strong score. The competition remains wide open ahead of the free program.
Roman Sadovsky knows the Canadian men's figure skating title is within his grasp. Despite acknowledging the constant presence of thoughts about the championship, he remains focused on his performance. Sadovsky, a 2022 Olympian, faced a stumble during his triple axel but recovered with a successful quad jump, securing 81.44 points in the short program. He admitted his axel was subpar but remained optimistic.
Sadovsky, aiming for his second Canadian championship after his 2020 victory, leads the competition.Local favourite Anthony Paradis of Boisbriand, Que., who secured bronze last year in Calgary, took second place with 77.27 points. John Kim from Toronto placed third with 71.32 points. The free program is scheduled for Saturday. The men's competition initially included strong contenders like reigning champion Wesley Chiu, Aleksa Rakic, and Stephen Gogolev. However, injuries forced Chiu and Gogolev to withdraw. Rakic, the silver medalist from last year, experienced a disappointing seventh-place finish after falling on two jumps. He attributed his performance to a recent illness. Sadovsky, despite the pressure, remains focused on refining his performance for the free program. Skate Canada will consider these results when selecting the representative for the world championships in March, with a final decision expected after the Four Continents competition in February. Canada will send only one man to the world championships in Boston.
