Mary MacInnis was a member of the committee behind the signs. She said the idea began about a year and a half ago as a way to commemorate the 10th anniversary of MacNeil’s passing on April 16, 2013.The signs cost about $7,000 with the majority of the money raised at a special concert by the Men of the Deeps — who frequently collaborated with MacNeil — at the Big Pond Fire Hall.
Two signs recognizing the late Rita MacNeil now welcome people to her beloved Big Pond. Contributed - ccSteve Parsons, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality councillor for the area, was also a member of the committee. He said CBRM public works erected the sign and the provincial Department of Transportation moved a stop sign to accommodate it.Parson said many people comment about the cowboy hat that’s positioned above MacNeil’s head.
