The Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) continues to make strides on and off the ice thanks to the return of several Olympians to this year’s rosters. | SaltWire
The Truro showcase is one of three conducted by the PWHPA this fall. The women opened in Montreal last month and have another scheduled for Pittsburgh, Pa., on Nov. 26-27. The PWHPA also has an all-star weekend event on Dec. 9-10 in Ottawa.
A few of the former Olympians included Nova Scotia players Blayre Turnbull and Jill Saulnier as well as American Kendall Coyne-Schofield, who wowed crowds at an NHL all-star skills competition a couple of years ago with her blazing speed. Canadian Olympic heroes Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Nurse, a definite fan favourite, also competed in Truro over the weekend.
As for a timetable as to when she would like to see a league formed for PWHPA members, Hefford said “as soon as possible.” “You're playing against a lot of national team players and some high-end college hockey players who are still playing. It's definitely faster than a college hockey game,” the former University of Wisconsin Badger said. “It's a tough game, very competitive and that's why I love it. In college, we had so many games that just turned into blowouts, but here every single game is competitive.
“We're all working to get better every day as individuals and as a team. Just getting to play these games, it's awesome.” Coming from the Bridgewater area to watch their heroes compete were Western Riptide U-11 AA team members Tessa Allery , Dayne Allery, Olivia Morash, Ainsley Burgess, Emberlee Peverelle, Paige Lowe and Quinn Lowe.“They made us feel like pros,” she said. “It’s also about exposure in these smaller towns. It helps people to be able to see women's professional hockey who normally wouldn’t get the opportunity. I think that was huge for all of us this weekend.
