First-time in two years a full ceremony is held around downtown cenotaph

Veterans Bob Baxter and Lloyd Coady took part in the wreath-laying ceremony as part of the Remembrance Day event in Truro. Richard MacKenzieTRURO, N.S. — It was, arguably, one of the most telling signs yet that events have returned to normal inas hundreds of people gathered around the cenotaph in downtown Truro to pay their respects to veterans during Friday morning’s Remembrance Day ceremony.

O’Laney said it’s also a time to think about those currently serving in conflicts around the world and those who are part of peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.“This November, we pay special tribute to her majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth and we remember her own military service as an army driver and mechanic during the Second World War. It was with great sadness that we all learned of her passing,” he said, before turning his attention to the 80th anniversary of the Raid on Dieppe.

Air force veteran Bill MacLeod sat with other veterans in the front row for the ceremony. He summed up what Remembrance Day means to him in one word. “Having served myself and having my brother just complete a 35-year career as well, it's a proud heritage moment for us,” Ellis said. “It’s always touching to be here at the cenotaph and remember those who went before us and allowed us to do the things that we were capable of doing today. It’s always a meaningful day for me.”“I'm never good at estimating crowds but to have a town square that's full of people, that's amazing,” he said.

“The number of young people attending touched me,” Mills said. “Chris Chapman playing the last post was emotional for me, especially since Queen Elizabeth passed away, and finally seeing all men and women of service while Ukraine and Russia are at war drove home the sacrifice of our fallen veterans.”
