Undefeated X-Men edge Mount Allison 21-14 in windy, wet Loney Bowl
The St. Francis Xavier X-Men celebrate their second straight Loney Bowl conference championship on Saturday after defeating the Mount Allison Mounties 31-14 at St. F.X. Stadium in Antigonish. - TIM KROCHAK / THE CHRONICLE HERALDANTIGONISH – Back-to-back Atlantic university football champion has a nice ring to it for Ben Harrington.
“When I arrived in Antigonish it was the COVID year and we couldn’t play that season. But we had lots of time to get better as a team and when we finally got started, we were just prepared to beat everybody and that’s what we did. “I was so zoned in, in the moment, I was just looking for the best way to get away from those Mount Allison fellas,” said the affable Harrington, who finished the game with 183 all-purpose yards, which also included a 41-yard kick-off return.
While tropical depression Nicole spared Antigonish from heavy rain early into the game, the strong southerly gusts limited the teams’ air attack in the first half. “As a defensive player we love these kinds of conditions,” said the six-foot-five Fedchun, the conference’s outstanding lineman for 2022. “The wind and rain, it was crazy when it changed every 30 seconds. But we love that on the defensive side of the ball. It keeps you on your toes.”
