The Pulse is SaltWire's deep dive series. In P.E.I., our reporters have been delving into the issue of housing. We have looked at housing supply, construction challenges, urban planning, and the experiences of those struggling to find homes. The coverage aims to highlight gaps and solutions to ensure affordable housing for all residents.

Stable housing key to lowering recidivism, but former P.E.I. inmates face stigma when looking for homesAfter losing home in fire, P.E.I. family turns to camper amid housing crisis Mayor Steve Ogden stops the conversation about growth in its tracks during an interview with him and MacDonald at the town hall. “People don’t want to drive and take time out of their lives to go and buy something or get a meal in a restaurant. When I was going door to door, people want to be a full-service community and provide everything here that people need. Our director of planning has a mantra he uses a lot and that it’s look after the edges.

“We don’t have enough facilities to accommodate them and we’re looking for help from the federal and provincial governments,” Ogden said. “We got money from the housing accelerator fund,” MacDonald said, in reference to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation program. “There is a lot of population here. We have to get the infrastructure they need to keep them safe and healthy. Two out of the last three census periods we’ve led the region … 23 per cent … compared to 11 per cent regionally.”

“Our intentions may take 20 years, it may be shorter, and it may be longer,” Trevor MacLeod, president of the Gray Group, told SaltWire. “It really all depends on the economy and the uptake.” The company currently owns the new Tim Hortons and the Shell/Mel’s Convenience Store and gas bar right next to it.
