The privacy commissioner called the searches unsubstantiated and recommend privacy training for officers.
A Victoria police officer and two Saanich police staff members conducted unauthorized searches for personal information about an Esquimalt man, according to the province’s privacy commissioner.
Harrison believed the searches were done without cause, and lodged a complaint with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner that the two departments did not adequately protect his personal information. The privacy commissioner recommended that both departments address the conduct of those who made the unauthorized searches and provide regular privacy training to all employees to ensure they have a clear understanding of their obligations under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act to protect individuals’ personal information from unauthorized access.
“In my view, this is a reasonable step that will engage staff to consider the actual purpose for their access,” the privacy commissioner’s report said.
