MacDougall, from Bedeque, P.E.I., built the men’s hockey program into a national powerhouse over 24 years as head coach. He officially retired from UNB on May 14.The official announcement took place during a media conference at the home of the Reds, Aitken Centre in Fredericton.
Several media reports have linked MacDougall to the head-coaching position with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League . The Wildcats called a news conference for May 15. Without those cancellations, MacDougall would have easily surpassed 1,000 games with the Reds. MacDougall, who is 15 games short of that milestone, compiled a .743 winning percentage – 732-232-21 .
“It goes back to our motto here; make a significant difference,” said MacDougall. “With all the people here at UNB, in Fredericton, even throughout New Brunswick, we tried to be a difference-maker and created a legacy of high-performance for our university and our province.”• Winningest head coach in Canadian men’s university hockey history.
