Ottawa Redblacks kicker Lewis Ward took it to heart when a B.C. Lions player called him \u0022chunky\u0022 last season.

“I always thought I was eating pretty healthy, but there were some things my body just wasn’t accepting. So we basically just upped the protein and cut out some of the starches. For almost two months, it was just meat and green vegetables. It’s been a huge positive, my body feels great. One of the reasons why I was nervous to change things in the past was because I was kicking so well. But in terms of energy levels and mentally, it’s helped me a lot and added a bit more confidence.

“You never want to change much, you just want to keep doing the job,” said Ward. “But you have expectations. And the expectations are there from 2018 and 2019. In the past, we’d get into a bit of a slump as a team and I’d be thinking: ‘If we make this kick, it gives us a chance to win, but if I miss, we’re kind of dead.’ With my mental state now, I’m a lot more relaxed, a lot more confident. So, the expectation is just to hit every kick.

“On the bye week, I went golfing with Richie and some of the members at the club were asking how we had already lost two games,” said Ward. “Richie said: ‘You know, it’s like golf. You can’t have two bad holes and all of a sudden your whole round is out the window.’ We’ve just got to wash those two games and go from there. The atmosphere around here is still pretty high. We just have to break through. We understand we’re not in the position we want to be in.
