Ottawa matches $22.3 million in donations for Red Cross Fiona relief efforts
The agency did not say how much emergency money was paid out, but it previously said about $30 million was distributed in $500 payments to registered households in Eastern Canada.
Peter Bevan-Baker, leader of Prince Edward Island’s official Opposition, says he would like to see a more detailed breakdown of how the donations were spent. The provincial Green Party leader says Islanders had trouble obtaining funds from the Red Cross, adding that the P.E.I. government should examine whether it could take on a larger role during disaster relief.
Post-tropical storm Fiona swept through Eastern Canada on the morning of Sept. 24, 2022, washing some homes into the sea and causing widespread power outages. Ottawa promised to match all donations raised by the Red Cross for Fiona relief until Oct. 31, 2022, and it took at least two months since that date for the federal government to distribute the money.Glenn McGillivray, managing director at the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction — a non-profit research centre affiliated with Western University — says governments need more robust disaster relief plans that can quickly get money to people in need.
Canada, McGillivray said, should not be relying so heavily on public donations to the Red Cross and volunteers on the ground to provide disaster response.
