TORONTO — An Ontario New Democrat legislator says governments and institutions in Canada are trying to use their voice and weight to silence people who support Palestinians.
Sarah Jama, who was elected earlier this year in a byelection in Hamilton Centre, spoke today against a motion in the legislature to censure her for a statement she made on the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Jama's original statement, on social media, decried"the generations long occupation of Palestine" without mentioning the attack by Hamas militants on Israeli civilians.In the legislature today — ahead of a vote on the motion following question period — Jama says Premier Doug Ford's government is targeting her to distract from its own scandals.
