HALIFAX, N.S. — Jah’Mila, Halifax’s reggae queen, electrified the Junos crowd on Saturday night but unfortunately didn’t walk away with a statuette.
Near the start of the show, Jah’Mila took to the stage to perform her song East Coast Family with several fellow Nova Scotians, including Owen O’Sound Lee and Mi’kmaw fiddler and singer Morgan Toney — who was also nominated for traditional roots album of the year . Reid said it’s amazing what performances like that can do for a musician’s career. For some artists, it has changed their lives because of who is in the audience and the offers that come in, he said.
“It feels really good,” she said, wearing a stunning blue dress by Envy and Grace and Toronto jewelry designer Jenny Bird. Jah’Mila said she’s been taking lessons from a friend at a modeling company on how to hold herself on the carpet in front of photographers. “Because, you know what? This place is full of so much incredible talent and so much wonderful music from all different genres, all different styles of music and art and creativity. The community, the sense of closeness and togetherness here I think is unparalleled.”Halifax’s Chip Sutherland was honoured with the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award on Saturday night.
