HALIFAX, N.S. — Jah’Mila, Halifax’s reggae queen, electrified the Junos crowd on Saturday night, but unfortunately didn’t walk away with a statuette.

Near the start of the show, Jah’Mila took to the stage to perform her song East Coast Family with several fellow Nova Scotians, including Owen O’Sound Lee and Mi’kmaw fiddler and singer Morgan Toney — who was also nominated for Traditional Roots Album of the Year . A Montreal artist creates a live painting of Gordon Lightfoot at the opening night awards for the Junos at the Halifax Convention Centre on Saturday night. - Tim Krochak“It’s not lost on me the opportunity that I had tonight and I wasn’t about to fumble with it and I gave it all I got,” she said. “We rehearsed, we prepared and I think we killed it.”Jah’Mila said she’s working on her second album now and expressed confidence that she’ll be back at the Junos next year.

“Because, you know what? This place is full of so much incredible talent and so much wonderful music from all different genres, all different styles of music and art and creativity. The community, the sense of closeness and togetherness here I think is unparalleled.”Halifax’s Chip Sutherland was honoured with the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award on Saturday night.
