The City of Nanaimo and the Regional District of Nanaimo are collaborating to expand warming shelter options and support services for individuals experiencing homelessness during the upcoming winter weather. The city anticipates flurries and cold temperatures throughout the weekend and into next week due to an arctic air mass. To address this, Nanaimo is utilizing emergency provincial funding to provide additional warming shelters and enhance existing outreach support services.

Mayor Leonard Krog emphasized the city's commitment to ensuring everyone has access to a safe and warm place during cold weather. He stated that the collaborative effort with the Regional District of Nanaimo and community partners aims to expand services and provide emergency relief spaces for those in need. The city urges anyone requiring shelter to utilize the available resources.Several locations have been designated as warming shelters and offer various support services. BC Housing's extreme weather response shelter, located at 6553 Portsmouth Drive, opened on January 30th and provides overnight emergency shelter for up to 30 people. An extreme weather relief space at the Centennial Building on 2290 Bowen Road will open on February 2nd, offering space for up to 80 people. The Regional District of Nanaimo Transit will provide transportation to and from both sites. The Drop-In Hub at 55 Victoria Road offers a daytime warming space, 20 overnight shelter beds, and is open seven days a week.
