HALIFAX, N.S. — N.S. Justice Minister Brad Johns has resigned following his comments on gender-based violence made on Thursday.

On the fourth anniversary of the 2020 massacre in Portapique, Johns addressed The Mass Casualty Commission's report released last year, which highlighted the role that gender violence played in the tragedy and that it is an epidemic."An , you're seeing it everywhere all the time, I don't think that's the case," he told reporters Thursday.

Later that day, Johns issued a statement apologizing for his comments and backtracking on his stance on gender-based violence. His comments have faced backlash from opposition leaders including NDP Leader Claudia Chender and Liberal Leader Zach Churchill, who both called for resignation."Domestic violence is an issue our government takes very seriously," read the statement.
