ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Sarah and her husband were counting the weeks. When they hit 12, they figured they could announce a much-wanted pregnancy after several losses. The Telegram is allowing"Sarah" to use a pseudonym because she is employed by Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services and worries it could affect her employment.Strong fetal heartbeat

To this point, Sarah had no pain. There was no bleeding. There was no sign of anything being wrong. On the day of her obstetrician appointment, she went by herself. Her husband was working, and the wait times were long. "The doctor called me that night and told me it is what we expected. There was a discrepancy of almost five weeks. I knew it wasn't like we're just measuring behind," Sarah said.

"They said it was an option, that I could probably wait until the next week, but again, it had been so long. The waiting wasn't ideal. So I went through the abortion clinic at Health Sciences," Sarah said."They placed a rod in my cervix that day and sent me home and told me that I could hemorrhage. I hope someone watches you overnight. You'll have to go to emergency immeditaley," Sarah said."I did not see anyone until twelve weeks post op," she said.

"I had walked around telling people that I was pregnant when fetal demise had happened almost five weeks previous," she said.More funding neededShe said people don't pay enough attention to the issue unless it affects them."I got lucky, apparently," Sarah said."Waiting for a referral to see the fertility clinic took months and months," Sarah said.

Officials in the Department of Health and Community Services and Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services are looking into improvements that can be made in patient care at the Health Sciences abortion clinic, Health Minister Tom Osborne said.
