Metro Vancouver transit ridership continued to climb in 2019

“It helps us think about where we’re going to have to put our resources for as long as persists, as well as when we think about how we best allocate services when we’re coming out of it and recovering from it,” said Geoff Cross.

Cross said much of the success of the last few years is due to the work municipalities have done with land-use planning and the way the transit authority has been targeting its improvements. He said the information in the performance review is important for that work, and although circumstances are different this year, the data will help “give transit its best chance” in the future.

“We know that Surrey and Langley have been growing faster than the average for Metro Vancouver and, as such, there’s been a lot of pent-up, latent demand in the southeast sector, and we basically haven’t been able to keep up with it,” said Cross, who pointed out that bus service hours were increased by 4.5 per cent in the southeast.

The next largest increase in annual boardings was in the Burnaby-New Westminster region, up 10.9 per cent over the previous year.
