“I loved it so much that I just kept buying kits to create for gifting to others,” says Newcombe, noting that for more than 20 years, she just focused on cross stitching.Newcombe says she always believed embroidery had more structure, and that she would have to stick to certain types of stitches. She soon realized that embroidery actually allowed her to have more freedom in the way she created art.
Besides embroidery, one of Newcombe’s most popular items she makes are her wooden wick candles inspired by the five elements — earth, fire, wind, water, and spirit. When asked what her business name, Sacred Cottage Creations, means to her, Newcome says she believes that all art can offer an element of healing. This may be the result of whether certain intentions are sewn in with each stitch, or the meaning it has to offer the recipient that stops to admire each stitch that comes together to create a finished piece.
With this in mind, Newcombe has expanded her art to include memorial pieces. This idea came about when a friend recently lost their beloved pet. She wanted to honour their memory the best way she knew how — through artistic creation.
